STLCC Job Training Program Recognized for High Job Placement Rate
For 50 years, St. Louis Community College has been educating individuals of all ages across the community. Whether it’s through continuing education courses or a path to an Associate’s Degree, STLCC provides the means to get ahead and learn something new. Over the years, STLCC has had the opportunity to create new programs and learning centers to provide more opportunities to residents. This time, the opportunities came through the Brownfields Job Training Program.
Supported by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) and administered through the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), this program offers residents of brownfields-impacted communities an opportunity to participate in a six-week technical training program. Administered by STLCC’s Workforce Solutions Group in conjunction with Saint Louis University’s Center for Environmental Education and Training, this program was recently recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 7 with an “Outstanding Leadership Award in Brownfields Job Training Placement.”
Through the Brownfields Job Training Program, students will complete 240 hours of training and learn topics such as lead abatement, mold and asbestos remediation and weatherization techniques. This coursework was created specifically to meet the needs of St. Louis metropolitan region employers and give students the skills necessary to earn entry-level work in the field. To date, 90 students have completed the program with a 79% job placement rate. Two more training sessions are scheduled to begin soon.
